Two Congressionally-designated Wilderness Areas cover this section of the Santa Lucia Mountains. The Ventana Wilderness was established in 1969 and now covers more than 236,000 acres, while more recently, the Silver Peak Wilderness was established in 1992 to protect more than 31,000 acres. Each wilderness area includes abundant creeks, a variety of trails and backcountry camps, diverse habitats for wildlife, and places of cultural and spiritual importance to Native people.
