Set sail for California's wild, windswept islands and discover an archipelago that time has left beautifully behind. Encounter the island fox found nowhere else on Earth, follow gray whales through the Santa Barbara Channel, and learn how isolation transforms ordinary creatures into extraordinary ones.
Through poetic verse, vivid illustrations, and fascinating real-world facts, this book reveals the science of island biogeography, marine ecosystems, and one of conservation's great comeback stories. A celebration of wildness and second chances, it invites readers to see the Channel Islands as a living laboratory where nature experiments, adapts, and endlessly astonishes.
About the Artist
Lauren Kapphahn is an artist and marine scientist fascinated with the natural history of places that have shaped us. Native to Port Hueneme, California, the Channel Islands have been a backdrop of her life. Modern fish tales from family, friends, tug boat operators, longshoremen, and surfers inspired her to complete her degree in Marine Science. She began painting in 2008 and created Rockside Studio to showcase her work alongside local artisans that share her goals of sustainability and ocean conservation.
