This set of 8 notecards designed exclusively for ForestWatch by local artist Lesley Goren showcases the sages that grow and flourish in Los Padres National Forest: hummingbird sage, white sage, black sage, purple sage, chia sage, creeping sage, and thistle sage. Each card is responsibly printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, paired with an envelope, and hand-tied with twine.

Sages belong to the family Salvia, a Latin word signifying health and healing, prosperity, and well-being. Their defining characteristic is a unique, lever-like mechanism that deposits pollen on the backs of bees as they probe the flower for nectar. California has 18 native sages. The Chumash have a deep traditional relationship with sage, using the plants for medicine, food, and spiritual practices.

Lesley Goren is a Ventura-based artist and illustrator whose work celebrates the natural beauty of the great outdoors and the plants that grow in each unique place. Lesley’s illustrations are lively, modern, and rooted in scientific accuracy, making nature feel approachable and alive on the page. Her artwork has been shown and sold in galleries, boutiques, and park visitor centers throughout California and beyond.

Cards measure 4.25 inches wide x 5.5 inches tall.
