Three Congressionally-designated Wilderness Areas cover this section of the Santa Lucia Mountains and the La Panza Range. The Santa Lucia Wilderness was established in 1978 and now covers more than 20,000 acres. Two smaller wilderness areas are found directly east: the Machesna Mountain Wilderness was designated in 1984 to protect approximately 18,000 acres, and the Garcia Mountain Wilderness was established in 1992 to protect approximately 14,000 acres. While each of these special places is unique, they all feature abundant creeks, a variety of trails and backcountry camps, diverse habitats for wildlife, and places of cultural and spiritual importance to Native people.
